Who we are
A non-profit that guides you to the right helping hand
Legal Aid Compass is a French non-profit (association loi 1901), founded by a team of lawyers and law students who share one ambition: to work for effective access to law and justice for people in vulnerable situations. Across several years spent inside varied organisations, university law clinics, pro bono programmes and non-profits, the same gap kept surfacing: people in vulnerable situations still have too few resources to quickly identify the organisation able to help them. Yet that first step is decisive. Late or ill-suited guidance can have serious consequences, and some situations need a fast legal response. The same is true for the organisations themselves, whose resources are often limited and whose time is precious; many face a heavy flow of requests that fall outside their remit, at the expense of the people who genuinely meet their eligibility criteria.
Legal Aid Compass was born from that observation, with two purposes. First, to build tools and programmes that steer people effectively toward the organisation best suited to their situation; by encouraging the right referral from the very first step, the association strengthens effective access to law while making the most of the resources of those who work for justice every day. Second, to actively strengthen access to law and justice by helping new public-interest organisations emerge, grow and find their footing, especially in the areas where provision remains scarce and where the most vulnerable still struggle to find suitable legal support.

The association
Much more than a directory
Beyond the interactive, collaborative directory, Legal Aid Compass is a French non-profit (association loi 1901). Its purpose is access to justice for people in precarious situations, everywhere in the world. In practice the association gives free, hands-on support to the organisations that already exist and want to grow, and helps start new ones in the blank spots on the map, the places where access to justice is still out of reach.
This support spans every area of law.
